Drive-In Rack system in an industrial warehouse

Drive-In Rack in Los Angeles, CA

For Los Angeles warehouses, drive-in rack planning starts with what must remain accessible while inventory moves. Forklifts enter storage lanes, reducing aisle space for bulk inventory with few SKUs. We compare the system with your stock quantities, handling equipment and receiving workload before recommending a layout. Our service territory includes the South Bay, Long Beach, Vernon and Commerce, plus Inland Empire distribution buildings. You get a Free Design Consultation, a drawing and an itemized scope, with access, load capacity and installation requirements discussed before you commit.

Drive-in rack removes aisles from the equation entirely. The forklift drives inside the structure and sets pallets on continuous rails, which can add positions compared with a single-deep layout when the inventory fits deep lanes. The cost is access: only the pallets at the open end of the lane are reachable until you work through the ones in front.

That makes it the right call for large volumes of a small number of SKUs - bulk buffer stock, seasonal inventory, freezer product - and the wrong call the moment SKU variety climbs. Drive-in loads and unloads from one end for LIFO; drive-through is open at both ends for FIFO, at the cost of a few positions and a second access aisle.

Why Los Angeles Warehouses Work With Us

Street access, receiving space and older building columns deserve a separate review in Los Angeles. We plan around the Alameda freight corridor without assuming that every site has a trailer yard, modern clear height or room to stage a full delivery inside.

Drive-in exchanges selective access for deep storage, so we ask which items fill a lane and how they are released. A lane that rarely fills is not a storage gain. The layout compares reserve depth with a selective alternative and leaves a separate route for everyday order picking. For apparel distribution, food distribution, e-commerce fulfillment in Los Angeles, that means discussing the actual receiving and dispatch workload before recommending a storage block.

As part of Warehouse Equipment & Supplies Co., we give your Los Angeles team one contact for layout questions, itemized pricing and installation planning. Loads, clear height and handling routes are considered with the proposed configuration. We explain the scope, access assumptions and approval steps before you choose a schedule, and retain the layout for later additions of new rack.

    How Drive-In Rack Works

    1

    Continuous rails, not beams

Pallets rest on rails carried by upright frames rather than individual beam levels, so a lane accepts pallet after pallet at the same elevation.

    2

    The truck enters the lane

The driver travels inside the bay to place or retrieve each load. Lane width, rail height, and mast clearance get dimensioned to that specific truck, not a generic one.

    3

    One open end or two

One open end gives LIFO and high storage density. Two open ends give FIFO with slightly fewer positions, since each lane now needs clearance from both sides.

    4

    Guarding built into the design

Guide rails, column guards, and rail-end protection are specified from the start to help protect the rack where forklifts enter the lanes.

    Where It Fits Best

High volume of a small number of SKUs
Seasonal or buffer inventory held in bulk
Cold storage and freezer rooms where cube matters most
Product too fragile to floor-stack more than two high
Buildings where floor space, not height, is the binding constraint

What We Need to Design It

    • What forklift will enter the lanes, and what are its exact dimensions?
    • How many pallets do you hold per SKU?
    • Do you need LIFO, or does the product require drive-through FIFO?
    • What's the clear height and floor condition in the storage area?
    • How many total pallet positions are you trying to reach?

    What a Project Includes

The design starts with the forklift, not the rack. Mast height, overall width, load backrest, and turning clearance decide lane dimensions, so truck specifications get collected before anything is drawn.

Next we look at SKU depth. Drive-in rewards deep lanes of a single product and punishes variety - if a lane never fills, you've built an expensive way to store less than you could have with selective. Where the inventory profile is mixed, we'll usually recommend a hybrid: selective at the pick face, drive-in behind it for reserve.

The quote itemizes frames, rails, rail supports, guide rails, and column protection, with a CAD drawing showing lane depth, rail elevations, and total positions. Experienced installation crews we schedule and manage set the rack anchored to the floor and align every rail run, then verify a loaded pallet travels the full lane before handing the system over.

Your team receives the final layout and documented capacities, with lane assignments and loading instructions reviewed before handover.

The CAD layout shows the storage arrangement, access routes, level elevations and rated configuration. Your itemized quote separates new system components, guarding, freight and installation, so you can compare alternatives rather than judging a lump sum. We confirm capacities for the final beam heights and load profiles before finalizing the layout.

Once the plan and access conditions are agreed, delivery and installation are sequenced around the work zones available. Experienced installation crews we schedule and manage set the system anchored to the floor and align it to the agreed scope, with loaded travel checks for moving lanes and case tests for carton flow. Your team receives capacity information and a final layout, plus clear loading and replenishment expectations. Later additions are reviewed against that configuration instead of assuming unused height can always take another level.
